Robot

Group blog cross-post. This was for our Topic #5 to create a rock em sock em robot. I knew I wanted a bulky upper body to depict power and a more slender lower body for speed.

Slightly cleaned up sketch above.

With colors and some changes to the face.

Hex

Here's an entry for topic 4 on a group blog. Theme was a LoL/DoTa inspired character.

This was the super quick initial sketch I started with. Originally imagined a bounty-hunter cowgirl holding two hand guns, but as I was sketching up the hat, I realized a witch hat would be so much cooler and thus she went from a cowgirl to a witch.

Beak

Another creature drawing I did awhile back, playing around with more vibrant colors.

Fallen

Group blog topic #5. Full Image:

Face details. Here's the initial rough.

After some rendering, made the face look less elfish:

Slither

Forgot I had this one lying around. I was practicing rendering gold textures with this; put the drawing off and completely forgot about it for about 3 years... This more or less was suppose to be a derivation of Medusa. I omitted the snake hair from this image as it was just rough silhouttes much like the incompletely rendered tail.

Wyvern

One of the creature drawings I've been doing lately. I wanted to make a horned dragon so I could practice rendering solid and leathery texture surfaces. Generally before I start doodling I usually have a pretty clear concept of a general idea I want to put into the drawing. For this I was going for a dragon with an axe/edged snout that can be used for goring prey.

I have to admit just being around some fantastic artists at work has helped me improve from both advice and observation in the years I've been there. Sometimes I still can't believe I'm in an art career today; I still remember daydreaming about doing art as a job when I was at college completing a degree in computer science, doodling in my notebooks when I should be taking notes.

In Red

Another piece from the old dust bin of unfinished works. I do remember doing this one as a test for painting with Painter again after a long hiatus; might have been 4-5 years ago. I actually rarely paint but mostly just do random sketches so this is probably the second/third attempt. The first time I actually tried painting with Painter was to create something I can use to apply for an art job at my work. I might post that at a later date.

This was for a character in a sci-fi world strapped into a bio-mech suit I had planned on creating. So yeah that didn't get too far done...

Quick rough 4/20

Trying to do one painting of some sort on a nightly basis, I feel like I'm starting to stagnate from pushing off drawing/painting after work for so long. This was done in roughly 30 minutes. I'll usually start fudging with the details and fixing mistakes but I'll leave it as is. Another bad habit is I stick to neutral and dull tones too much... Adding some reddish orange hue always helps.

This was done in Photoshop.

Embrace

A piece I doodled up back in '03 when I first started using Painter and digital painting/drawing in general. Back then it was unfathomable to me how people were able to draw, let alone paint, using Photoshop... times certainly have changed my point of view. Now it's the other way around, I find it harder working with Painter especially since each version seems to always feel different than the one before it.

I'm still a big fan of the Angelic/Demonic theme, I think for awhile that was all i was sketching back then. I tend to also always draw from memory and never from reference so anatomy and proportions are usually out the window. Even now I still rarely look at references when I work, which I need to change...old habits, bad habits.

Alice

Been practicing painting again; it's been way long since I've done any personal work. Was creating creatures and needed a break from that. I actually always wanted to do different renditions of classic fairy tale characters, so here is Alice in battle gear.
